Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion

The Design Museum of London is gearing up to host a groundbreaking exhibition called ‘Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion’ starting from September 16th. This highly anticipated exhibition, which is being hailed as one of the most extensive surveys of contemporary British fashion culture in the UK, is a collaborative effort between the Design Museum and the British Fashion Council (BFC), with sponsorship from Alexander McQueen.

Set to coincide with London Fashion Week, ‘Rebel’ will serve as a platform to showcase three decades worth of revolutionary designs that have shaped London’s distinct fashion culture on the global stage. The exhibition will pay homage to over 300 young designers, known as the NewGen alumni, and recognize their significant contributions to the fashion industry.

Among the many highlights of the exhibition, visitors will have the chance to witness the iconic Swan Dress designed by Marjan Pejoski, famously worn by Björk at the 2001 Oscars. Other notable pieces include the outfit worn by Harry Styles in Steven Stokey Daley’s music video for ‘Golden’, as well as a replica of Sam Smith’s inflatable latex suit created by Harri for this year’s Brit Awards. Christopher Kane’s neon collection from his debut catwalk show, Russell Sage’s upcycled Union Jack jacket worn by Kate Moss for Vogue, and Molly Goddard’s viral blue ruffle dress worn by Rihanna will also be on display.

In addition to these stunning garments, the exhibition will incorporate films, drawings, memorabilia, and never-before-seen archive material from some of the country’s most renowned contemporary designers. The Design Museum has worked closely with these designers to curate an exclusive selection of important and groundbreaking pieces from their personal archives. Many of these items have not been available for public viewing since their initial debut.

It is worth noting that all the designers featured in the exhibition received support during their early careers through the BFC’s NewGen initiative. Sarah Mower, BFC Ambassador for Emerging Talent, has taken on the role of guest curator for the exhibition, alongside Rebecca Lewin, Senior Curator at the Design Museum. Mower emphasizes the tremendous influence London has on fashion talent, highlighting the city’s ability to nurture young designers who prioritize originality, self-expression, and the tackling of social issues. She believes that ‘Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion’ will take visitors on an extraordinary journey through London’s creative landscape, providing an unprecedented insight into the city’s art schools, clubs, and catwalks.

‘Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion’ promises to be an immersive and inspiring experience, providing a unique perspective on the evolution and impact of London’s fashion culture over the past three decades. The exhibition will undoubtedly showcase the incredible talent and creativity that continues to emerge from the vibrant and diverse fashion scene in the capital city of the UK.
