Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion

The Design Museum in London has recently launched its newest exhibition, Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion. This exciting showcase coincides with London Fashion Week and aims to celebrate the creativity and rebellious nature that has been synonymous with the city’s fashion scene over the past three decades.

One of the main sponsors of the exhibition is Alexander McQueen, highlighting the brand’s dedication to supporting and nurturing young designers. The exhibition pays homage to the late Lee McQueen and features his personal journey as well as his iconic Taxi Driver collection, providing visitors with a glimpse into the early stages of his career.

The exhibition has been curated by Sarah Mower, a prominent figure in the British Fashion Council’s emerging talent scene, and Rebecca Lewin from the Design Museum. They have carefully selected designs from the BFC’s NewGen program, showcasing the work of talented designers such as Christopher Kane, Molly Goddard, JW Anderson, and Craig Green. These designers have all participated in the program and have challenged norms while pushing boundaries in the industry.

Rebel goes beyond simply displaying garments, incorporating visual installations and themed sections to offer a more immersive experience for visitors. From recreating the ambiance of a London club to featuring a full-scale runway, the exhibition aims to transport visitors into the vibrant world of London fashion.

In a unique departure from traditional fashion exhibitions, Rebel has partnered with Snapchat to offer augmented reality (AR) experiences. By using AR lenses, visitors can transform themselves into models seen in the designers’ showcases, with a particular focus on their innovative prints. Some of the designers featured in the AR experience include Charles Jeffery Loverboy, Gareth Pugh, and Matthew Williamson.

With its focus on the rebellious spirit and creative energy that define London’s fashion scene, Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion is a must-see for fashion enthusiasts and anyone interested in exploring the city’s influential fashion landscape. As the exhibition opens its doors, there are also plans to potentially embark on a tour, allowing London’s fashion heritage to reach an even wider audience.
