RCA and Max Mara Launch Scholarship Program

The Royal College of Art (RCA) and luxury brand Max Mara have come together to launch a new scholarship program, demonstrating their dedication to supporting students facing financial hardship. This initiative focuses specifically on students enrolling in the MA Fashion program at the School of Design. As part of their commitment to inclusivity, the RCA has expanded its range of scholarships available to students in need, with a wide selection of over 180 scholarships, awards, and prizes available for the current academic year.

Through the partnership with Max Mara, two deserving students per year will be awarded generous scholarships amounting to £30,000 each. This substantial sum covers the entirety of their tuition fees and additionally provides a contribution towards maintenance and materials. For the next three academic years, starting in September 2023, these scholarships will be provided to deserving students.

Over and above the financial assistance, the selected students will be afforded the invaluable opportunity to gain industry experience through a paid design internship at Max Mara’s headquarters in Reggio Emilia, Italy. This international exposure will allow them to further hone their skills and nurture their creative potential.

Of notable significance, Max Mara’s Creative Director, Ian Griffiths, himself obtained an MA in Fashion Design from the RCA in 1987. His connection to the college traces back to the early stages of his career, as he took part in a Max Mara competition organized by the RCA. This experience had such a profound impact on him that he decided to join the brand as a designer after completing his studies. Given his strong ties to the RCA, Griffiths has been honored with the appointment of an Honorary Visiting Professor.

The ultimate goal of the collaboration between the RCA and Max Mara is to empower emerging designers and eliminate any financial obstacles standing in the way of their creative growth. By offering these scholarships, individuals from diverse backgrounds can pursue their passion for fashion and take advantage of the esteemed education and industry exposure provided through this prestigious partnership.
