Rare Russian Pink Diamond Sets Record at Sotheby’s Auction in Geneva

The recent Sotheby’s auction in Geneva made headlines as a rare Russian pink diamond, known as “The Spirit of the Rose,” fetched an extraordinary $26.6 million, setting a new world record for the highest price ever paid for a purple-pink diamond. This 14.83-carat gem originated from the largest raw pink stone ever discovered in Russia, adding to its allure and exclusivity.

Bidders eagerly competed during the online auction, with the price quickly reaching 21 million Swiss francs, highlighting the intense interest in acquiring this exceptional diamond. The final buyer, choosing to remain anonymous, further emphasized the mystique and prestige associated with owning such a rare and unique piece.

Sotheby’s auctioneer, Benoit Repellin, emphasized the natural beauty and scarcity of pink diamonds, noting their increasing value as they become harder to find in the market. The journey of “The Spirit of the Rose” began with a 27.85-carat stone unearthed in Russia’s Sakha republic, which was meticulously transformed into a stunning pink diamond while preserving its distinctive color.

Pink diamonds have long been considered some of the rarest and most coveted gemstones worldwide. In 2017, the CTF Star Pink diamond set a new record when it sold for $71.2 million in Hong Kong, underscoring the enduring popularity and value of these precious gems. Sotheby’s revealed that pink diamonds have dominated the list of the ten most expensive diamonds ever sold, with five of them being pink, all sold within the last decade.

The recent closure of the world’s largest pink diamond mine in Australia’s Argyle deposit has further diminished the supply of these sought-after gems. This development has only served to increase the rarity and desirability of pink diamonds, making them even more attractive to collectors and investors globally.
