Puig to Close Factory in Barcelona in 2023 and Expand Headquarters

Puig, the Spanish fragrance, cosmetics, and fashion giant, has made the decision to close its factory in Besòs, Barcelona in 2023 as part of its growth and innovation strategy. The closure of the factory, which has been in operation since 1968, will result in approximately 400 employees being impacted. However, Puig has reached an agreement with the trade unions to relocate all affected staff.

To absorb the production previously handled by the Besòs factory, Puig will concentrate its manufacturing operations at its other two plants located in Vacarisses and Alcalá de Henares, both within the Barcelona region. The Vacarisses plant, known for its expertise in skincare products and perfumery accessories, will take on the majority of the production load. Meanwhile, the Alcalá de Henares plant will focus on fragrance production.

In addition to the factory closure, Puig is investing 15 million euros in expanding its headquarters in L’Hospitalet, Barcelona. The company plans to construct a new building next to its existing facilities to accommodate the employees affected by the closure. This new 21-storey building, developed by Colonial and Inmo, will be shared by both Puig and its holding company Exea.

Puig, founded in 1914, is a prominent player in the fashion and beauty industry. The company boasts a diverse brand portfolio, including Carolina Herrera, Paco Rabanne, Jean Paul Gaultier, Dries Van Noten, and many others. Puig has also recently acquired Byredo, Loto del Sur, and Kama Ayurveda. Additionally, it holds licenses for Christian Louboutin and Comme des Garçons Parfums, as well as various lifestyle fragrances.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Puig experienced a significant increase in turnover in fiscal year 2021, with a 27% growth compared to 2019, reaching €2.59 billion. The company operates globally, with a presence in 150 countries and offices in 29 of them. Puig aims to achieve sales of €3 billion and an EBITDA of €500 million by the end of 2022.
