Prada’s Revamping of the America’s Cup

Prada has recently put the finishing touches on its revamping of the prestigious America’s Cup competition, unveiling a new qualifier trophy that marks a significant milestone in the fashion house’s involvement in the event. The journey for Prada’s collaboration with the America’s Cup began more than twenty years ago in Milan, and now, with the new trophy in place, the competition is set to enter a new era.

The America’s Cup, which has a rich history dating back to 1851 when the schooner “America” claimed victory in the first race off the coast of England, is now under the sponsorship of Prada, taking over from Louis Vuitton. The Italian fashion house is injecting its signature style and elegance into the competition, positioning itself as a key player in the world of sailing.

Patrizio Bertelli, Prada’s chief executive, has expressed a strong commitment to winning the 36th America’s Cup, with the support of co-sponsor Pirelli. The Italian Luna Rossa team, under the leadership of director and skipper Max Sirena, is preparing to challenge cup defender New Zealand in the races set to unfold in Auckland in 2021. The competition will showcase advanced foiling monohulls that promise thrilling and fast-paced action on the waters of Auckland.

Renowned designer Marc Newson has been enlisted by Prada to give the America’s Cup a contemporary visual identity, adding a touch of sophistication to the event. Teams such as Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa, INEOS Team UK, and American Magic are hard at work designing their cutting-edge vessels for the upcoming competition.

The journey to the America’s Cup will kick off with the America’s Cup World Series in 2019 and 2020, featuring the new AC75 Class boats. The series will culminate in a Christmas Regatta in Auckland in 2020, leading up to the final showdown in March 2021 between Emirates Team New Zealand and the victor of the Prada Cup.

Following their victory in the 35th America’s Cup in 2017, Team New Zealand earned the privilege of choosing the location and format of the next event, setting the stage for an intense face-off between top sailing teams. With Prada’s sponsorship bringing a fresh perspective to the competition, the America’s Cup is gearing up for an exciting and competitive few years ahead.
