Pierre Cardin’s Revival: Return to Paris Fashion Week

Luxury fashion brand Pierre Cardin is set to make a long-awaited return to Paris Fashion Week in an effort to rejuvenate the label following the death of its founder. After the passing of Pierre Cardin in December 2020, his nephew and chosen successor, Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin, has taken on the task of reviving the brand.

In an interview with AFP before the latest Paris Fashion Week, Basilicati-Cardin revealed that his uncle had opted to step back from the official fashion calendar for the past two decades to make room for young designers and their opportunities. However, the new CEO now believes it is time to relaunch the brand and gain greater public attention. To kickstart this revival, a special commemorative show dedicated to Pierre Cardin is scheduled to take place on January 28, following the haute couture week.

Basilicati-Cardin expressed his desire for the brand to have a presence at fashion week at least once a year, citing the importance of publicity. While his uncle evolved into a more creative role in his later years, the brand’s founder played a significant part in revolutionizing fashion during the 1960s and 1970s with his bold and futuristic designs inspired by the space age. It is, therefore, appropriate that the tribute show will be held at the Air and Space Museum outside Paris, where the theme of outer space will be emphasized, evoking the spirit of the 1960s.

Despite Pierre Cardin’s success in licensing his brand to various companies and products, some critics argue that this led to a dilution of the brand’s allure, as it became associated with cheaply made clothing on a global scale. Basilicati-Cardin, who has worked alongside his uncle since the 1990s, believes in the importance of simplicity and embraces the love for curves. As the CEO, he still personally designs glasses and approves ideas for future collections.

Recognizing the need to reinvigorate the brand, Basilicati-Cardin is open to collaboration with new designers from outside the company. However, he is determined to ensure that the legendary founder’s legacy is never forgotten. Plans are already in progress to organize another major commemoration in July, marking Pierre Cardin’s 100th birthday, potentially in Venice. With a focus on honoring the founder’s legacy while embracing new growth opportunities in the fashion industry, the future of Pierre Cardin looks promising.
