Paris’s Inaugural Digital Couture Season

Paris’s inaugural digital couture season began with a bang as Schiaparelli and supermodel Naomi Campbell took center stage. Usually, couture week in Paris is a time when affluent women flock to the city to attend live runway shows and place orders with top luxury fashion houses. However, this year, the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic forced the event to go virtual.

Schiaparelli set the bar high for the 33-event lineup with a captivating film called Collection Imaginaire. The film offered a glimpse into the creative process of their talented couturier, Daniel Roseberry, as he worked on his latest collection from his home in New York. Viewers were treated to behind-the-scenes footage of Roseberry sketching his designs, infusing Elsa Schiaparelli’s signature motifs with a contemporary flair.

Naomi Campbell made a powerful statement on the digital platform hosted by the Fédération de la Couture et de la Mode, advocating for diversity and equality in the fashion industry. Clad in a T-shirt emblazoned with the words Phenomenally Black, Campbell called for tangible change within the fashion world. Her message resonated throughout the season, underscoring the importance of using fashion as a platform for social activism.

The day also showcased other standout moments, such as Ulyana Sergenko’s tribute to the traditional crafts of Russian fashion and Iris van Herpen’s avant-garde creations featured in a mesmerizing film titled Transmotion. Additionally, London-based couture house Ralph & Russo wowed audiences with a video presentation that paid homage to the Seven Wonders of the World and introduced a cutting-edge avatar named Hauli, symbolizing the intersection of innovation and couture.

As day one came to a close, it was evident that Paris’s first digital couture season was pushing boundaries and redefining the way haute couture is presented. From the intimate glimpses into designers’ artistic processes captured on film to the pioneering advancements in digital presentation, this season promises to be a historic moment in the world of high fashion.
