Paris Good Fashion leads sustainable fashion movement

From September 3rd to October 25th, Paris Good Fashion, alongside partners such as Galeries Lafayette and Etam, is inviting consumers to participate in a global movement towards more sustainable fashion. This multi-stakeholder project aims to answer the important question of how we can collectively promote responsible fashion. Paris Good Fashion has set the ambitious goal of making Paris the capital of sustainable fashion by 2024, and they are currently leading an unprecedented citizen consultation to achieve this. In collaboration with Galeries Lafayette, Paris Modes Insider, the Etam group, and Vestiaire Collective, they are encouraging individuals to express their ideas and vote for proposals that will help create a greener textile sector. These proposals include advocating for transparency in clothing origin, eliminating plastic hangers, and increasing the use of recycled materials. All of these actions are aimed at reducing the industry’s environmental impact.

This initiative acknowledges the crucial role of the consumer in driving change within the fashion industry. Sylvie Benard, President of the Board of Directors of Paris Good Fashion, emphasizes the importance of individuals who purchase and wear clothing in the transition towards sustainable fashion. It is not only an opportunity for consumers to be involved, but also for fashion professionals to demonstrate their commitment to listening to and considering the expectations of their customers. Antoine Bézard, a consultant and founder of lesbudgetsparticipatifs.fr, explains that these citizen consultations signify the recognition of citizens’ expertise alongside that of industry experts in finding new solutions and giving them a voice. Such citizen consultations have gained momentum since the Grand Debate, providing a platform for inclusive and constructive debates that social media does not always facilitate. Participants in this consultation will undoubtedly question whether their messages have been heard and if their contributions will have a meaningful impact on decision-making. Overcoming this challenge lies both with the mechanisms behind these consultations and the initiators’ responsibility to ensure that participants’ voices are heard.

In addition to launching this citizen consultation, collaborating brands are also taking concrete actions within their spaces. Using the platform provided by Galeries Lafayette, the campaign “Today and Tomorrow, Let’s Change Fashion” is showcasing responsible fashion through a series of workshops and meetings. The campaign runs until October 11th and aims to promote the approximately 700 Go for Good labeled brands available in the store. This eco-responsible label has gained traction, with BHV joining the movement and aiming to introduce 25% of Go For Good labeled products into its offering by 2024. These initiatives highlight the commitment of industry players to drive change and promote sustainable practices within the fashion sector.
