Paris Good Fashion Citizen Consultation Results

Paris Good Fashion has unveiled the results of its citizen consultation on sustainable fashion, which gathered responses from over 100,000 French citizens. The consultation, conducted from September 3rd to October 25th, 2020, aimed to gather opinions and ideas on how to build a more sustainable fashion industry. Out of the 107,000 participants, 79% were women and 21% were men. The top responses were about recycling and second-hand clothing, local production, materials and production processes, consumer information, packaging, and working conditions.

One important finding from the report is that the French believe brands are more capable of taking action than consumers, while few individuals think that legislative actors can make significant changes. The President of Paris Good Fashion, Sylvie Benard, sees this as a reflection of consumer maturity and their desire to move faster.

Based on the consultation results, Paris Good Fashion proposes various avenues and solutions. These include the establishment of collection points for recycling, donations of unsold items to charitable associations, and increased support for French flax and wool industries. The organization also commits to using at least 50% organic or recycled cotton and 50% certified recycled synthetic materials by 2024. Other initiatives include recycling hangers and plastic polybags in partnership with the City of Paris, training sales staff on responsible fashion, transparency in information, and publishing brands’ tier 1 suppliers. Paris Good Fashion plans to implement these initiatives starting this year and aims to fulfill all commitments by December 31, 2024, with ongoing monitoring.

In response to the consultation, Galeries Lafayette and Vestiaire Collective have announced new initiatives. Galeries Lafayette plans to include 200 local brands in their stores by 2024, replace plastic garment protection bags with recyclable materials, and offer resale or recycling solutions for all products sold. Vestiaire Collective intends to develop green transportation, raise awareness among customers about responsible consumption, and test reusable packaging.

Overall, the consultations conducted by Paris Good Fashion have provided valuable insights into consumers’ expectations and have spurred action from both brands and platforms in the fashion industry.
