Ten years after the Palais Galliera paid tribute to Azzedine Alaïa’s creative journey, the fashion museum is once again honoring the late designer. This time, the focus is on Alaïa’s role as a collector. From September 27, 2023, to January 21, 2024, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the extensive collection of garments accumulated by Alaïa throughout his life.
While Chloé currently showcases Karl Lagerfeld’s creations in its stores, the Palais Galliera is preparing to present a brand new exhibition that delves into the world of Azzedine Alaïa. Recognized for his exceptional cutting techniques, Alaïa drew inspiration from fashion’s past masters, acquiring a significant number of garments after the closure of the Balenciaga house in 1968. This marked the beginning of a vast collection that would eventually comprise over 20,000 pieces.
Among the items that will be showcased at the exhibition are a 1924 embroidered dress by Madeleine Vionnet, a 1949/1950 black dress with a brown fabric tied at the back by Jacques Fath, a 2014 transparent and voluminous structured dress by Comme des Garçons made from various materials, and a rare late 19th-century red dress from Redfern.
Miren Arzalluz, director of the Palais Galliera, and Olivier Saillard, director of the Azzedine Alaïa Foundation, together with Alice Freudiger, have curated the exhibition. Their aim is to pay homage to the rich history of fashion and the craftsmanship embodied in the garments in Alaïa’s collection.
Currently, the Palais Galliera is hosting the “Fashion in Motion” exhibition until early September. This exciting event offers visitors a glimpse into the world of fashion and its evolution throughout the years.
