New York Men’s Day: Celebrating Diversity in Menswear

New York Men’s Day, which recently concluded its 19th season, once again proved to be a major draw during New York Fashion Week. The event, held on the first day of the week-long affair, saw a remarkable turnout with over 600 attendees including esteemed buyers, influential editors, trendsetters, and fashion enthusiasts. Offering a delightful feast for the eyes, the event boasted a total of twelve menswear and all-gender collections, with this season’s edition featuring six exciting first-time brands.

One collection that stole the spotlight was Bulan by Beam Ratchapol Ngaongam, an extraordinary display of innovative layered knitwear. Inspired by mental illness, the designer aimed to shed light on the struggles faced by those affected by it. The vibrant colors utilized in the collection were deliberately chosen to “mask the sadness,” while the asymmetrical designs and holes in the knits symbolized the imperfections of the mind. The inclusion of a wooden tree on the set emphasized the collection’s objective of providing comfort and healing.

Jahnkoy, a brand helmed by the talented husband-and-wife duo Burkindy and Marusya Tamboura, captivated the audience with their unique blend of traditional cultures and contemporary aesthetics. Their designs ingeniously reimagined traditional African wraps by incorporating button-closures and pockets, effectively transforming them into practical everyday wear. Additionally, the collection showcased intricately tailored jackets constructed from upcycled materials, resulting in a visually striking patchwork effect. Handwoven fabrics in vivid hues were sourced from a Burkina Faso weaver cooperative, while Chinoiserie-inspired fabrics paid homage to Marusya’s Siberian heritage.

Several returning brands also left a lasting impression on the attendees, including A. Potts, Atelier Cillian, Raleigh Workshop by Victor Lytvinenko, Nicholas Raefski, and Terry Singh. One of the standout brands, Nobis, served as the official outerwear sponsor and wowed the audience with their collection that seamlessly blended tailored style with practical functionality. The Canadian brand showcased a diverse range of outerwear pieces paired with versatile pants and leggings. Drawing inspiration from the glamour of the 80s, the collection exuded a vibrant color palette and paid homage to the optimistic fashion trends of that era.
