New York Fashion Week Returns in September

After being predominantly digital for the past two seasons due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, New York Fashion Week is gearing up for a triumphant return in September. The Spring/Summer 2022 season is set to run from September 8 to 12 and will mark the physical revival of the event, with the majority of runways expected to be held in person rather than virtually.

The highlight of this fashion extravaganza will be the 11 brands that recently formed the Fashion Alliance with the support of IMG. Telfar, Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, Brandon Maxwell, Prabal Gurung, Sergio Hudson, Monse, Jason Wu, LaQuan Smith, and Markarian have all committed to showcasing their collections at New York Fashion Week for three seasons, starting from September.

This collaboration between brands is just one example of the fashion industry’s solidarity in the face of the pandemic. Initiatives like the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and the ANDAM prize have launched grants to support established brands that have been impacted by the crisis.

According to Leslie Russo, IMG’s president of fashion events and properties, the Fashion Alliance will provide investment, content, and talent support to participating brands. It represents the collective effort of the fashion community to bring joy to people through their work, as emphasized by Brandon Maxwell.

In addition to the 11 Alliance members, other American brands making a comeback in New York in September include Pyer Moss and Thom Browne. Pyer Moss is returning to the runway after a two-year hiatus, while Thom Browne is coming back from several seasons showcasing in Paris. Furthermore, Peter Dundas, a Parsons graduate, and Moschino, an Italian luxury brand, will be presenting their collections in the city.

On the flip side, iconic New York Fashion Week regulars like Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors have yet to confirm their participation. However, CFDA chairman Tom Ford will appear on the calendar and co-chair the highly anticipated Met Gala.

The Met Gala serves as the culmination of NYFW Spring/Summer 2022 and will take place on September 13. After being canceled in 2020, this year’s gala will celebrate the Costume Institute’s exhibition titled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and will be hosted by Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka.

The return of New York Fashion Week in September holds special significance as it showcases the resilience and independence of American fashion while solidifying New York City’s position as a global fashion force, according to Tom Ford. After a long absence, the fashion industry eagerly awaits the return of in-person runways and the iconic buzz of New York Fashion Week.
