New York Fashion Week 2020 Highlights

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has officially kicked off its newly shortened four-day September 2020 schedule, marking the start of a season unlike any other. This year, designers are facing unprecedented challenges brought on by a year of social and political unrest, as well as the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. In response to these challenges, most shows are being streamed online via the CFDA’s innovative Runway360 platform, allowing fashion enthusiasts to partake in the excitement of fashion week from the safety and comfort of their own homes.

One designer who seamlessly embraced the digital format was Los Angeles-based Jonathan Simkhai. His fall/winter 2020 collection, titled ‘Step By Step’, served as a reflection on the current moment and the collective yearning for change. Simkhai’s collection featured a mix of classic menswear-inspired pieces and sleek dresses adorned with vibrant colors and prints, showcasing his commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

Adeam, the New York-based womenswear brand by Hanako Maeda, transported audiences on a digital voyage to Japan in the summer with their spring/summer 2021 collection. Filmed against the backdrop of Meiji Kinenkan, Tokyo, the collection offered a selection of clean and relaxed pieces in a calming palette, capturing the essence of Japanese culture during the summer season.

Celebrating its 20-year anniversary, Imitation of Christ presented a spring/summer 2021 collection that focused on heroism and unity during challenging times. With a lineup of upcycled and avant-garde designs, the collection featured distressed pieces, patchwork smocks, and tie-dyed shirts layered with sports jerseys. The brand’s partnership with The RealReal underscored their dedication to sustainability and ethical fashion practices.

NYFW Day 1 also featured engaging digital talks with industry stalwarts like Carolina Herrera and creative director Wes Gordon. The discussions touched on their affection for New York City and their insights into the past, present, and future of fashion. As the fashion industry navigates through unprecedented times, designers and industry insiders are leveraging digital platforms to connect with audiences and inspire them with innovative presentations.

Featuring presentations from iconic designers like Anna Sui, Badgley Mischka, and Bevza, NYFW promises to showcase resilience, creativity, and a dedication to pushing boundaries despite adversity. Keep an eye out for more updates and highlights from NYFW as we delve into the latest trends and innovations in the world of fashion.
