Mulberry Made to Last: A Sustainable Manifesto

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Mulberry, the renowned UK luxury goods brand, has unveiled its new sustainability manifesto titled ‘Mulberry Made to Last’. This manifesto outlines the company’s ambitious commitment to transforming its entire business into a regenerative and circular model by the year 2030. Mulberry aims to apply these principles throughout its supply chain, from sourcing materials to the creation of finished products.

Among the key initiatives highlighted in the manifesto is the development of the world’s lowest carbon leather. This innovation will be used in Mulberry’s “farm to finished product” bags, which will be locally made. By sourcing leather from a network of organic and environmentally conscious farms, Mulberry aims to achieve full traceability while reducing the environmental impact associated with traditional cattle farming practices.

Additionally, Mulberry has set a goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2035. To achieve this, the company plans to extend the lifespan of its products through repair and restoration. Mulberry will also implement a buy-back program, as well as resell or repurpose any Mulberry bag to minimize waste. The brand is dedicated to being a Living Wage employer and will collaborate with its network of suppliers to ensure fair wages across its supply chain.

The upcoming collection, scheduled to launch this year, is described as a representation of Mulberry’s future direction. It will establish a model that can be replicated in partnership with trusted collaborators, further supporting the company’s ambition of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2035.

Mulberry has a strong commitment to manufacturing in the UK, with over half of its products produced locally. The factories with which Mulberry works are already carbon neutral, and all employees receive a real Living Wage. Mulberry’s Somerset factory, The Rookery, is home to the Repairs Team, comprised of experts in restoration and repair who process over 10,000 bags annually. With archival materials dating back 35 years, they ensure that Mulberry products can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

As part of its circularity strategy, the brand is also embracing resale as a core element. Mulberry has recently formed a partnership with Vestiaire Collective, a platform for pre-owned luxury items, and expanded its digital presence through Mulberry Exchange. These initiatives allow customers to buy and sell pre-owned Mulberry items, reducing waste and extending the lifespan of products.

Mulberry’s Sustainability Manifesto presents a clear roadmap for the brand’s dedication to environmental responsibility and social ethics. By adopting a holistic approach to sustainability, from material sourcing to product end-of-life, Mulberry strives to lead the luxury goods industry in transforming into a more regenerative and circular model.
