Moncler has unveiled its latest collaboration with innovative Chinese designer, DingYun Zhang, as part of its Genius project. Set to hit stores on February 10, the collection features a dozen voluminous down jackets that showcase Zhang’s unique design perspective.
Hailing from Beijing, Zhang has had a passion for fashion since a young age. He began his design journey by creating sneakers while still in high school, and later drew inspiration from renowned painters like Robert Rauschenberg and David Hockney. After moving to England to study fine art, Zhang eventually graduated from Central Saint Martins in London with a degree in Fashion Design in 2020. His exceptional talent led him to be recruited by Kanye West’s brand, Yeezy, where he played a vital role in the success of several cult models.
For Moncler, Zhang has crafted a collection of down jackets in various forms, including coats, vests, and micro jackets. These pieces are elevated with oversized masks and balaclavas, and are created using ultra-lightweight, slightly crinkled shiny nylon. They are complemented by colorful leggings and furry boots, creating a striking ensemble. The prices of the collection range from 230 euros for cycling shorts to 2,900 euros for more elaborate pieces.
Zhang’s design approach centers around voluminous shapes and layering, resulting in smooth silhouettes with concealed zippers and knotted buttons. He experiments with fabrics and shapes, incorporating Swiss cheese-like holes into vests and implementing origami-like cutouts on a camouflage printed top. The collection draws inspiration from the ocean floor and its inhabitants, resulting in futuristic garments featuring large, rounded sleeves.
Speaking about his collaboration with Moncler, Zhang stated, “I am all for big volumes that sculpt the body into new forms. I took inspiration from underwater creatures to devise pieces that float lightly, in a color palette that resembles the coral and fungi that naturally grow on top of sculptures submerged in the deep sea.”
