MM6 and GCDS: Captivating Audiences with Retro Charm and Fantastical Glamour

MM6, the contemporary line of Maison Margiela, made its physical debut in Milan with a show that was filled with retro charm and a joyful atmosphere. The event took place at La Belle Aurore, a Milanese bar known for its outdated decor, which added to the nostalgic ambiance of the show. To create a welcoming atmosphere, MM6 transformed the entire street surrounding the bar into a spacious terrace where guests could enjoy aperitifs while they eagerly awaited the start of the show.

Designed by an anonymous collective, the MM6 collection drew inspiration from the archives of fashion designer Martin Margiela. The pieces showcased a unique blend of irreverence and creativity. The runway presentation began with models wearing unconventional ensembles, such as a white suit with a jacket featuring three sleeves and a black satin sheath dress paired with glamorous gloves. As the show progressed, it took on a Halloween-inspired theme, with psychedelic harlequin patterns, clown-like ruffs, and a net top that resembled a giant spiderweb. All the while, a Fellini-inspired soundtrack played in the background, creating a playful and Dolce Vita (sweet life) ambiance.

Meanwhile, GCDS presented their Spring/Summer 2022 collection through a dreamlike video directed by designer Giuliano Calza. The video was set in a futuristic environment reminiscent of a red planet, with endless dunes creating an otherworldly atmosphere. Calza explained that he wanted to create a fantasy world, like an island or underwater paradise, where people could escape after the challenging times the world has faced. The collection embraced a chic and sexy aesthetic with a 70s vibe and extravagant embellishments. Models strutted down the digital runway wearing ultra-short and sparkly outfits, paired with vertiginous platform sandals sporting 25cm heels. Standout pieces included lurex cardigans depicting the sunset over the sea and denim shorts adorned with teardrop-shaped stones. Notably, the collection incorporated references to the popular Japanese manga series “One Piece,” featuring pop-print pieces with iconic symbols like the “Straw Hat Pirates” skull and crossbones logo. Completing the vacation-inspired wardrobe were crocheted fishnet-style swimming caps, raffia hats, and bags.

Both MM6 and GCDS managed to captivate their audiences and provide a refreshing escape from reality with their shows. MM6’s incorporation of retro charm and playful irreverence created an unforgettable experience, while GCDS’s dreamlike video transported viewers to a fantastical underwater world filled with glamour and embellishments. Milan Fashion Week continues to showcase the creativity and innovative spirit of fashion designers, and these two brands have certainly delivered in that regard.
