Milan Fashion Week’s Opening Day: Versace, Etro, and Tod’s Unveil Iconic Collections

Milan Fashion Week took off with a bang as three iconic fashion houses, Versace, Etro, and Tod’s, unveiled their latest collections. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the incredible cyberpunk display by Donatella Versace, showcasing a collection that breathed new life into the brand. With a new CEO leading the way, Versace presented a daring and edgy cyberpunk-inspired line that captured the brand’s signature sass, confidence, and sex appeal.

The show itself was held in a massive hangar on the outskirts of Milan, providing an industrial backdrop for the striking designs. The set was adorned with grand pianos, Renaissance gold chairs featuring the iconic Medusa logo, and an electric, candlelit nerve center. Leading the pack was supermodel Gigi Hadid, who opened the show in a semi-sheer black mesh gown, setting the tone for a series of ten all-black looks.

The finale of the Versace show was truly breathtaking, featuring distressed and destroyed jeans, ripped cardigans, feather bow-like shawls, and crystal-encrusted scarf skirts. The models strutted in towering, pointy clogs and wore elongated trousers in jacquard, brocade, and black satin, adorned with gold chains. De Vincenzo’s collection marked a shift from the bohemian-chic aesthetic of previous designers, Veronica and Kean Etro. However, elements of the brand’s signature style still made an appearance in the finale, featuring a beautiful Arcadian print mini cocktail dress with tassels. De Vincenzo expressed his desire to break free from the past and tell a new story while paying homage to Etro’s rich history and iconic logo.

At Tod’s, designer Walter Chiapponi took a minimalist approach with the Spring/Summer 2023 collection, drawing inspiration from the minimalism and silhouette of the 90s. The show, held at the prestigious art institute, Pirelli HangarBicocca, demonstrated a focus on quality and construction, with warm tones and a color palette inspired by skin tones, makeup, sand, ecru, and mauve. Chiapponi seamlessly incorporated menswear elements into the womenswear collection, featuring oversized coats, blazers, and pleated trousers. The signature Tod’s Gommino moccasin received a contemporary twist, with larger proportions and contrasting colors, earning it the affectionate nickname of ‘Babbo’ or ‘daddy’ by Tod’s owner Diego della Valle. Chiapponi also introduced new bags, including pony-skin clutches adorned with the iconic ‘T’ logo. The show culminated with the stunning black leather sleeveless dress worn by a black model, perfectly embodying the simplicity and elegance of the collection.

Overall, Milan Fashion Week’s opening day showcased exciting and innovative designs from Versace, Etro, and Tod’s. These debut collections and fresh perspectives set the stage for a thrilling week of fashion in the Italian fashion capital.
