Michael Kors’ Fall 2019 Runway Show Channels the Spirit of Studio 54

The spirit of Studio 54 was alive and well at Michael Kors’ Fall 2019 runway show, held in the opulent surrounds of Cipriani in Manhattan’s Financial District. The disco ball-studded venue provided the perfect backdrop for a collection that transported attendees back to the glamorous and decadent 70s. As the grand finale of New York Fashion Week, the show unveiled a stunning co-ed collection that paid homage to the iconic Studio 54 era in all its glory.

The runway was graced by low-cut, dazzling sleeveless dresses that channelled a distinct Diana Ross aura, alongside chic women’s suits inspired by the effortlessly stylish Bianca Jagger. Both men and women strutted in jackets featuring bold winged collars paired with trendy bell-bottom pants. The ensemble was further elevated by faux furs, shearling coats, and shimmering trenches in an array of colors and prints, adding a touch of retro charm.

Amidst the glitz, leather, snakeskin, and tweed jackets made a statement alongside sharp Glen plaid suits. Some pieces even boasted an official Studio 54 logo print, evoking nostalgia and adding a retro feel to the collection. Accessories played a key role, with aviator glasses, turbans, oversized baker boy hats, and luggage-inspired bags with metallic accents bringing a vintage touch to the overall aesthetic.

The show reached its peak as Patti Hansen made a grand finale walk, followed by a surprise performance of “Copacabana” by the legendary Barry Manilow, who dazzled in a bright orange, crystal-encrusted ensemble. With top model Bella Hadid as one of the faces of the campaign, the event was a star-studded affair that truly captured the essence of Studio 54.

Despite a slight decline in revenue in Q3, the Michael Kors brand remains robust thanks to its iconic handbags, men’s shearling and leather outerwear, and diverse range of accessories and women’s ready-to-wear pieces. As part of Capri Holdings, the brand continues to make waves globally, with plans to expand its footprint in Europe. Studio 54 may be a distant memory, but at Michael Kors, the spirit of that unforgettable era lives on in all its glory.
