Mercedes-Benz Pays Tribute to Virgil Abloh with Innovative Solar Energy Maybach Concept

The latest project from the automobile manufacturer pays tribute to the late Virgil Abloh, a renowned American designer who tragically passed away on November 28th. Mercedes-Benz has collaborated with Gorden Wagener, the Director of Design for the German brand, to create an innovative solar energy Maybach concept. Following in the footsteps of Virgil Abloh’s final fashion show for Louis Vuitton, this collaboration aims to honor the designer’s legacy by presenting a show car that reimagines the iconic Maybach and captures the essence of our cultural spirit.

Unveiled at the prestigious Art Basel international art fair in Miami, the show car is a breathtaking two-seater vehicle that combines off-road elements with Gran Turismo proportions, measuring an impressive six meters in length. This project aligns with Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to transitioning to 100% electric vehicles by 2030, as the car features a transparent hood equipped with solar sensors. These sensors harness solar energy to power the car’s electric battery, showcasing the brand’s dedication to sustainable mobility solutions.

The Rubell Museum in Miami served as the venue for the unveiling of this unique model, marking a significant moment in the Art Basel program. Mercedes-Benz wanted to honor Virgil Abloh’s memory by opening its doors to the general public on December 1st and 2nd, even setting aside a specific time slot for design students. By doing so, the brand aims to not only pay homage to Virgil Abloh but also to engage in a conversation around luxury design and inspire the next generation.

“The Mercedes-Maybach show car is a humble contribution to Virgil’s vast legacy and illustrates the possibilities of design in the future,” states the brand. Through this public presentation, Mercedes-Benz seeks to enrich the dialogue surrounding luxury design and serve as a source of inspiration for young designers. These two aspects have always been at the core of Virgil Abloh’s work, making this collaboration a meaningful way to honor his influence and continue his legacy.
