MBFW Madrid: Adapting to the Changing Fashion Industry

MBFW Madrid, Spain’s renowned fashion week, is undergoing a transformation to adapt to the changing fashion industry and accommodate emerging designers and established brands. In its 78th edition, taking place from September 13 to 17, the event made significant changes to attract a wider audience, including the decision to open its doors to the public.

This move towards inclusivity resulted in increased attendance by influencers and even the presence of the Spanish Prime Minister. MBFW Madrid also aimed for international recognition by scheduling the event concurrently with London Fashion Week, positioning itself as a competitor to other global fashion weeks.

The 78th edition featured 42 designers and brands showcasing their collections for the upcoming fall/winter 2023/24 season. While some shows were held at various locations around Madrid, the majority took place at the Ifema fairground, which also hosts other professional trade fairs. Notable designers and brands such as Custo Barcelona, Isabel Sanchís, and Pedro del Hierro participated in the event.

An important update for MBFW Madrid was the introduction of ticket sales for runway shows. This pilot project aimed to democratize access to the shows and generate additional revenue for the organizers. The ticket sales were a success, with multiple shows selling out completely. The availability ranged from 10 euros for access to activities at the Cibelespacio to 60 euros for access to the runway show and after-party. Packed grandstands with up to 800 guests attending each show demonstrated the popularity of this initiative.

While the democratization of the event created a festive atmosphere with a diverse range of attendees, there were concerns from industry professionals that it may deviate from the event’s original professional platform. However, the organizers emphasized that Cibelespacio was intended to be a social hub that connects fashion with various experiences.

MBFW Madrid gained attention on social media with the participation of celebrities, reality TV personalities, and influencers in the runway shows. Spanish TikTok star Lola Lolita and Instagram influencer Dulceida were among the notable personalities involved.

Morocco also took the spotlight at MBFW Madrid under the title “Morocco, Kingdom of Light.” Two Moroccan haute couture designers, Maison Artc and Albert Oiknine, presented their collections. Albert Oiknine showcased Moroccan savoir-faire and the caftan elaboration, blending Moroccan roots with Western influences. Maison Artc focused on upcycling vintage fabrics to create unique pieces.

To further promote the event internationally, MBFW Madrid collaborated with MBFW Mexico through a designer exchange program. Mexican designer Lorena Saravia participated in the Allianz EGO runway, and the winner of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talent, Aitor Goikoetxea, will showcase their creations at the upcoming edition of the Mexican event.

MBFW Madrid provided a platform for emerging designers to showcase their talent, highlighting the diversity and creativity of the Spanish fashion industry. From haute couture to streetwear, the event featured a range of designs.

Overall, MBFW Madrid is building its future by opening its doors to the general public and focusing on internationalization. The event aims to make fashion more accessible while generating excitement and interest. With its strategic positioning and collaborations, MBFW Madrid solidifies its place on the international fashion week calendar.
