Max Mara Unveils Cruise Collection in Lisbon

Max Mara recently unveiled its latest cruise collection in the beautiful city of Lisbon, with inspiration drawn from Portuguese icon Natália Correia. The collection was showcased amidst the serene and picturesque backdrop of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s garden, and it featured a range of romantic and practical garments suitable for various occasions.

The collection paid homage to Correia, a renowned Portuguese free-thinker famous for her unique brand of feminism called “erotic liberalism,” which emphasized the combination of intelligence and sensuality. The creative director of Max Mara, Ian Griffiths, discovered inspiration for the collection in a captivating painting of Correia by Nikias Skapinakis, exhibited at the Gulbenkian Foundation.

The designs presented by Max Mara included elegant pencil skirts, bustier dresses, and tiered taffeta gowns, all crafted in soft metallic tones such as copper, aubergine, and mustard. Pleated fabrics were incorporated into the designs, drawing inspiration from Correia’s close friend, Amália Rodrigues, to add texture and depth. The collection seamlessly blended classic styles with modern elements, such as pinch pleat trims and fashion-forward proportions.

In a historic moment for the brand, the Max Mara runway featured its first-ever male model, Martim Morais, who donned a standout camel hair coat with a luxurious, sable-like finish. The coat exemplified Max Mara’s commitment to inclusivity while showcasing their expertise in crafting exquisite outerwear. Coats, a signature component of the Max Mara aesthetic, were showcased in timeless black, brown, white, and camel shades.

The collection also emphasized the celebration of Lisbon’s vibrant local culture. Embroidered t-shirts adorned with romantic declarations, known as “Lencos de namorados do minho” or Letters of Love, represented a charming nod to the city’s heritage. The runway show was further enhanced by the presence of Carminho, one of Portugal’s most esteemed contemporary fado interpreters, who gave a remarkable performance during a lavish dinner party held in a resplendent baroque palace the night before.

Overall, Max Mara’s cruise collection not only paid homage to Lisbon but also managed to encapsulate the brand’s signature style and craftsmanship. It was a beautiful display of affection towards the city and its rich cultural heritage.
