Matthew Williams appointed as Creative Director at Givenchy

The fashion world was abuzz with speculation following Clare Waight Keller’s departure from Givenchy in April, wondering who would fill the coveted role of creative director next. The rumors can now finally be put to rest as it has been officially announced that US designer Matthew Williams will be stepping into the prestigious position at the renowned Parisian luxury label. The news was confirmed by multiple industry sources, and Givenchy gave their stamp of approval to the appointment on Monday afternoon. Williams is set to take the reins as creative director on Tuesday, June 16.

At just 34 years old, Williams brings a youthful energy and a wealth of experience to Givenchy, marking a new chapter for the brand. His responsibilities will include overseeing all aspects of the brand’s collections, spanning from menswear to womenswear and haute couture. This crucial appointment comes amidst a time of transition for Givenchy, with Renaud de Lesquen assuming the role of CEO in March.

Hailing from Illinois and growing up in California, Williams has always been drawn to the intersection of fashion and streetwear. Despite facing setbacks in gaining admission to fashion schools, he paved his own path by collaborating with musicians, including a memorable experience as Lady Gaga’s first creative director from 2008 to 2010. Williams’ breakthrough moment came when he was appointed creative director at Studio Donda, Kanye West’s creative agency, where he worked alongside future fashion luminaries like Virgil Abloh and Heron Preston.

In 2015, Williams launched his own label, initially named Alyx before being rebranded as 1017 Alyx 9SM, which garnered significant acclaim and collaborations with esteemed brands such as Dior, Moncler, and Nike. This success solidified Williams’ position as a dynamic force in the fashion realm.

Currently residing in Milan, Williams has not disclosed whether he will be relocating to Paris for his new role at Givenchy. With his innovative vision and a proven track record in the industry, Williams is poised to inject a fresh perspective into the iconic Parisian brand, ushering in a new era of creativity and style.
