Marli, a promising French brand founded by Amélie Prêtre in 2016, has found success by relying on synthetic leather to design its tote bags. This choice sets Marli apart from other luxury brands, as it prioritizes sustainable and eco-friendly production methods. The brand recognizes that millennials are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

Marli takes a unique approach to creating its tote bags by sourcing used haute couture creations from flea markets and garage sales. These vintage pieces are then recycled and transformed into one-of-a-kind tote bags of various sizes. The use of synthetic leather gives the designer the freedom to explore different styles and create a collection of luxury bags that blend vintage and modern aesthetics. Each bag is handcrafted, adding an additional level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Amélie Prêtre’s journey to launching Marli involved a previous attempt with a Swedish friend that faced challenges due to production constraints abroad. However, she remained committed to creating high-end products using synthetic leather and forged ahead with launching Marli. The brand now sells its creations through its e-commerce website and has plans to open temporary pop-up stores, allowing customers to physically experience the unique material and craftsmanship.

In order to solidify its commitment to sustainability and inclusivity, Marli collaborates with a workshop called Esat in the Paris region. This workshop employs disabled workers with prestigious talents to manufacture the tote bags. By working with Esat, Marli not only supports the local community but also emphasizes the importance of providing opportunities for people of all abilities in the luxury fashion industry.

Looking ahead, Marli has ambitious plans for the future. In summer 2017, the brand intends to recycle the fabric from beach chairs and incorporate it into innovative fashion designs. However, Prêtre will continue to focus primarily on her synthetic leather tote bags, showcasing them at the Who’Next event from January 20th to 23rd to expand her distribution network.

Overall, Marli stands as a shining example of a sustainable and socially conscious luxury brand. By utilizing synthetic leather, recycling vintage pieces, and collaborating with disabled workers, Marli successfully combines style, ethics, and craftsmanship.
