Marimekko: Finnish Design House Faces Challenges Amidst Global Pandemic

Marimekko, the renowned Finnish design house recognized for its eye-catching prints and lively colors, is grappling with a significant crisis brought on by the ongoing global pandemic’s impact on the fashion industry. In a disheartening turn of events, the company reported a 20% decrease in sales during the second quarter of the year, prompting Marimekko to announce a strategic restructuring of its operations to better align with the changing landscape of post-pandemic consumer behavior.

The drastic decline in sales was attributed to the unprecedented challenges faced by the fashion and specialty retail sectors worldwide. The pandemic has catalyzed a shift towards digital sales platforms, compelling even new customer demographics to increasingly rely on online channels for their shopping needs. Recognizing this shift, Marimekko is proactively reassessing its distribution strategies to stay relevant in the evolving marketplace.

In light of these changes, Marimekko has already commenced the adjustment of its retail operations and is now moving forward with additional measures to ensure its sustained competitiveness. President and CEO Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko stressed the imperative need for the company to revamp and streamline its operations to effectively navigate the current industry scenario.

As part of its restructuring initiatives, Marimekko has laid out plans to engage in consultative negotiations with its personnel in Finland, Scandinavia, North America, and Australia. The primary objective is to realign the organizational structure, job responsibilities, and work methodologies to effectively address the challenges posed by the pandemic’s impact.

While some job losses are anticipated as a consequence of the restructuring efforts, Marimekko is exploring potential modifications to job roles, work practices, and operational structures. The company is also contemplating the outsourcing of select functions as a means to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs.

By the conclusion of June 2020, Marimekko employed 432 individuals, of whom 193 are the focal point of the ongoing restructuring endeavors. It is anticipated that these changes will lead to an annual cost saving of approximately €1.5 million, positioning Marimekko for sustained success in a post-pandemic era.
