Luxury group Kering has formed a partnership with Albini_next and Vienna Textile Lab to accelerate the development of alternative dyeing methods using 100% natural processes. This collaboration is part of Kering’s Material Innovation Lab initiative.
The focus of Kering’s innovation lab is the use of microbial dyes to color cotton and other natural fibers. By working with Albini_next and Vienna Textile Lab, the fashion group aims to explore and test the use of microorganisms derived from plants or mineral materials in different textile applications.
Given the growing consumer demand for sustainability, the sustainability of materials and processes has become increasingly important. This partnership aims to provide sustainable alternatives to the current petrochemical-based dyeing methods that dominate the fashion industry. The goal is to offer sourced, biodegradable, and non-toxic alternatives.
Vienna Textile Lab’s CEO and founder, Karin Fleck, believes that working with industry leaders like Kering and Albini allows them to understand how their microbial dyes perform on different fabrics. This collaboration enables them to optimize their manufacturing process and progress towards industrial-scale production.
The Kering Material Innovation Lab was established in 2013 with the aim of offering sustainable materials to Kering’s various fashion houses, including Gucci, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and Bottega Veneta. The company is also actively working on enhancing traceability across its supply chain.
