Ludovic de Saint Sernin: The Creative Director of Ann Demeulemeester

Ludovic de Saint Sernin, the renowned designer celebrated for his daring and sensual style, has begun an exciting new chapter as the creative director of Ann Demeulemeester. This iconic fashion house welcomed de Saint Sernin in December and he recently unveiled his highly-anticipated debut collection, which beautifully combines his own unique energy with a deep respect for Demeulemeester’s legacy.

The collection made a bold statement as it opened and closed with identical silhouettes. A mesmerizing long silk skirt gracefully cascaded to the floor, complemented by a leather feather-shaped bra. This extraordinary combination served as a heartfelt tribute to the influential members of the Antwerp Six, a group of avant-garde designers who gained prominence in the early 1980s. Additionally, it paid homage to Ann Demeulemeester herself, referencing a heartfelt letter she penned in 2013 to express her departure from the fashion house she founded in 1982.

For his inaugural collection, de Saint Sernin delved deep into the Ann Demeulemeester archives, immersing himself in the brand’s signature dark and minimalist aesthetic. However, he skillfully infused it with his personal vision, seamlessly merging uninhibited sensuality with androgynous romanticism. The result was a collection of essential pieces, each boasting its own exquisite detail. Models confidently strutted down the runway wearing bare-chested superb skirts, occasionally elegantly draping their hands or crossing their arms. The showcase also featured alluring furry tops, open jackets, graceful satin dresses, cozy knitwear, and ethereal chiffon creations, all held together with delicate straps or tied at the neck.

The dominant color palette throughout the collection was a sophisticated black, occasionally adorned with white pieces and subtle hints of red and chocolate to add depth to the neutral shades. A recurring theme in the collection was gender-neutral fashion, as both men and women confidently wore black leather shirts, trousers, and coats. The looks were completed with leather riding boots, which added a touch of edginess and sophistication.

Beyond the extraordinary designs themselves, the fashion show itself was a testament to the revitalized energy and contemporary vision that de Saint Sernin is bringing to Ann Demeulemeester. The Lycée Carnot, the chosen venue, was filled with enthusiastic fans, underscoring the newfound visibility and renewed interest in the brand. Ludovic de Saint Sernin has undoubtedly set the stage for a promising and highly desirable era for Ann Demeulemeester.
