After making its debut at the Grand Palais in Paris three years ago and traveling to cities such as Tokyo, Seoul, and New York, Louis Vuitton has now landed in China. The luxury brand has chosen Shanghai as the location for its exhibition “Volez, Voguez, Voyagez,” which will be on display from November 16, 2018, to February 1, 2019.
This retrospective exhibition tells the story of Louis Vuitton, from its inception in 1854 to the present day. Curated by Olivier Saillard and set designed by Robert Carsen, the exhibition features 15 rooms that showcase the brand’s craftsmanship and influential figures. Visitors can explore heritage objects from the Maison, as well as pieces from museum collections like the Palais Galliera.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the connection between Louis Vuitton and China. The display includes Albert Kahn’s favorite trunk, which accompanied him on his trips to China where he photographed the imperial family. In addition, the exhibition features artworks by Chinese artists such as Yan Pei Ming, He An, and Ding Yi, further strengthening the brand’s ties to Chinese culture.
In today’s digital era, Louis Vuitton has ensured that the exhibition offers an augmented experience for visitors. A mini-program has been developed on the social network WeChat, allowing visitors to access various services on their phones. This includes an integrated audio guide, photo filters inspired by the different spaces in the exhibition, and a virtual desert expedition. The brand has partnered with other digital platforms like Mobike and Ctrip to promote the exhibition and provide personalized scenarios for visitors. Dianping, the Chinese equivalent of Yelp, also offers curated recommendations of nearby locations for visitors to explore.
