London’s West End set for summer footfall increase

London’s West End is set to experience an increase in footfall this summer, as revealed by a survey conducted by the New West End Company (NWEC). The survey, which involved 1,200 consumers, demonstrated that UK consumer confidence is at its highest level since the start of the pandemic, with 64% of respondents feeling optimistic about shopping for non-essential items.

In April, footfall in the West End reached an average of 45% of the usual monthly number. Although this may not appear to be a significant rise, it is a positive figure considering footfall plummeted by over 80% at various points during the pandemic. NWEC highlighted that this indicates a promising start to the reopening, as shoppers are taking full advantage of the district’s outdoor spaces, restaurants, and retail stores.

The absence of international tourism, which typically contributes to a third of total visitors to the West End, has posed a challenge for businesses. However, despite this setback, footfall is anticipated to gradually increase over the summer months, supported by the boost in consumer confidence. The survey unveiled that 61% of respondents are confident about returning to the office full-time, representing a 9-point increase since February. This indicates a substantial number of consumers who are eager to contribute to the footfall in the West End.

Consumer confidence is also evident in other aspects. The survey demonstrated that 64% of individuals feel confident about shopping for non-essential items, marking a 21-point increase since February. Similarly, 61% feel confident about dining out in restaurants, indicating an 18-point increase. These figures reveal a growing sense of optimism among consumers compared to June 2020, when only 41% felt confident about shopping for non-essential items.

Moreover, the survey discovered that 54% of respondents now have confidence in using public transport, compared to just 35% in June 2020. This is noteworthy as public transport is crucial for accessing the West End.

Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that the West End’s recovery may take some time. While a majority of office workers express a desire to return, a significant minority prefer flexible working arrangements. Despite this, the overall outlook remains positive. Jace Tyrrell, Chief Executive of the NWEC, expressed optimism, stating that the West End has experienced a long-awaited reopening and is welcoming back Londoners. The goal is to attract visitors from across London and the UK to embrace the unique offerings of the West End this summer.
