The Loewe Foundation is back with the fourth edition of the Craft Prize, but this time it will be held entirely online due to the ongoing pandemic. Opening on May 25th, the exhibition will feature the works of 30 talented finalists from around the world, making it the most diverse lineup of artists since the award’s inception in 2016.
These finalists hail from six different continents and 18 countries, showcasing a remarkable global representation. Through their creations, these artists have pushed the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship and explored a wide range of materials, including textiles, ceramics, wood, and metal. Their works serve as a testament to their mastery and skill.
One notable aspect of this year’s finalists is their commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. Many of them have incorporated found and recycled materials into their artwork, demonstrating a conscious effort to repurpose and create beauty from the discarded. The winner of the Craft Prize, who will be revealed on May 25th through Loewe’s website and social media channels, will receive a significant prize of €50,000. A jury consisting of 12 influential figures from the realms of architecture, fashion, design, and art, including Olivier Gabet, director of the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts, and Genta Ishizuka, the 2019 Craft Prize winner, will have the challenging task of selecting the ultimate victor.
Although the physical exhibition will take place in the Grand Hall of the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts, advanced digital technology will enable visitors to explore the artworks in a virtual environment. Through 3D modeling, 360º high definition, and augmented reality features, viewers can immerse themselves in the exhibition from the comfort of their own homes, providing a unique and interactive experience.
