Liverpool One’s Success during Eurovision

Liverpool One, the primary shopping mall in Liverpool, experienced a tremendous surge in both foot traffic and sales during the Eurovision Song Contest. Although the UK’s entry didn’t perform well in the competition, Liverpool One, acting as the host for Ukraine, witnessed unprecedented numbers of visitors and a substantial increase in sales.

The mall went all out by organizing a week-long extravaganza to coincide with the contest, and the outcome surpassed all expectations. From May 7th to May 13th, footfall in Liverpool One was an astounding 31.5% higher compared to the same week in 2022. This impressive growth significantly outperformed the national average, which stood at 5.7% across the UK as a whole.

The impact of Eurovision extended beyond the actual contest week. From May 5th to May 14th, the mall experienced a remarkable 17.3% spike in foot traffic compared to the corresponding period last year, drawing a total of 680,000 visitors. This influx of visitors directly translated into increased sales, with an additional £19.9 million in consumer spending in Liverpool One, according to consumer and location intelligence specialist CACI.

During the semi-finals and final, total sales witnessed a remarkable 23% increase compared to the previous year. These exceptional footfall and sales figures establish the Eurovision week as the most successful of 2023 for Liverpool One, surpassing even the holiday season’s post-Covid-19 records.

The success of Liverpool One during Eurovision can be attributed to the influx of tourists and visitors attracted to the city. Liverpool wholeheartedly embraced the Eurovision frenzy, drawing visitors from a broad range of countries. The highest number of visitors came from Switzerland, the US, Uzbekistan, the Netherlands, and Ireland, according to CACI.

Donna Howitt, the Place Strategy Director at Liverpool One, described the impact of Eurovision as a testament to the city’s sociable nature and welcoming atmosphere. She expressed immense pride in Liverpool One’s contribution to the success of Eurovision and its ability to create a memorable experience for all visitors.

In conclusion, the staggering surge in foot traffic and sales that Liverpool One experienced during Eurovision demonstrates the positive economic impact of hosting large-scale events. The remarkable success of the mall highlights Liverpool as an appealing destination for both domestic and international visitors and underlines the city’s proficiency in hosting successful and unforgettable events.
