Letter to the future sentinels of Humanity

Italian fashion designer Brunello Cucinelli has penned a heartfelt letter titled “Letter to the future sentinels of Humanity,” in which he celebrates the youth just before the Epiphany. This Christian feast commemorates the first visit of the three Magi kings to the Infant Jesus. The letter, comprising 1,100 words, calls on Generation Y and Z to embrace a new sense of humanism.

In his letter, Cucinelli expresses his adoration for young people, perceiving them as “the salt of the earth” and the guardians of our future. Drawing from his personal experiences, Cucinelli shares his journey from his youth to becoming a successful fashion designer. He emphasizes the importance of pursuing one’s dreams and living a humanistic life, both towards oneself and others. Cucinelli believes that his childhood poverty played a significant role in shaping his perspective on life, and he regards it as a “gift” rather than a condemnation. This upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.

As the founder of his eponymous brand in 1978, Cucinelli is renowned for his philanthropy and commitment to humanistic values. In 2012, when his fashion house went public, he rewarded artisans and employees with substantial bonuses. His brand is expected to reach annual revenues of one billion euros this year, allowing him to transform the medieval hamlet of Solomeo in Umbria, his birth region, into a creative laboratory and modern factory town.

Cucinelli perceives wealth as a responsibility and a means to benefit others. Throughout his letter, he cites quotes from famous writers and philosophers, highlighting the importance of transformation and enlightenment. The designer also underscores the value of sight as one of the most precious gifts bestowed upon humanity, drawing inspiration from the Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti.

Within the letter, Cucinelli encourages young people to shun anger and embrace a new vision. He acknowledges the challenges they face, often stemming from societal pressures and misconceptions about work. Cucinelli urges the youth to nurture their souls and reminds them that one noble gesture can redeem any mistakes. He advises them to cultivate understanding and consideration towards others, emphasizing the significance of family, education, work, and love. Cucinelli concludes by invoking the protection of Creation.

Overall, Cucinelli’s letter serves as a rallying cry for the younger generation to adopt a humanistic mindset, pursue their dreams, and make positive contributions to society. It stands as a testament to his unwavering belief in the power of youth and his dedication to inspiring and empowering them.
