Lenzing Introduces Sustainable Tencel Fibre Innovation as Competitors Struggle

Austrian cellulose fibre producer, Lenzing, has unveiled its latest innovation in sustainable fibres with the development of a new treatment for its Tencel lyocell fibre. This groundbreaking treatment allows for the creation of a lightweight and elastic fibre that is not derived from fossil fuels, positioning it as a direct competitor to synthetic stretch fibres.

Lenzing’s Tencel lyocell fibre is made from wood pulp and is considered the most sustainable material in its range. The production process is environmentally friendly and resource-saving, utilizing a closed-loop system. In addition to Tencel lyocell, Lenzing also offers other sustainable options such as Ecovero viscose and Modal Tencel, which are known for their durability and breathability.

With the introduction of this new treatment, Lenzing aims to present the lyocell version of Tencel to its partner factories for further refinement. The company believes that Tencel will play a crucial role in the future, particularly as it anticipates long-term stabilization in global cotton output.

Lenzing faces stiff competition from Indian group Aditya Birla in the industry. In the fiscal year 2022, Lenzing reported a revenue of €2.5 billion. However, the company experienced a 5.3% decline in revenue during the first three quarters of fiscal year 2023. Lenzing is set to release its annual results for 2023 on March 15.

By challenging synthetic stretch fibres, Lenzing is aiming to provide a more eco-friendly alternative for the fashion industry. The company’s commitment to responsible production processes and the introduction of innovative materials positions it as a leader in sustainable fibres. Industry professionals eagerly anticipate the availability of the new Tencel fibre as Lenzing continues to push the boundaries of what can be achieved in the realm of cellulose-based textiles.
