Korean Artist Dahye Jeong Wins Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2022

Korean artist Dahye Jeong has emerged as the winner of the highly esteemed Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2022. The announcement was made at the opening of the exhibition featuring the works of the 30 finalists in Seoul. Jeong’s artwork, titled “A Time of Sincerity,” captivated the international jury, who were impressed by her dedication to reviving and modernizing traditional craftsmanship. They commended the delicate perfection, transparency, and lightness portrayed in her work.

Initiated by Spanish luxury brand Loewe, the Craft Prize aims to acknowledge exceptional contributions in contemporary craftsmanship. The competition received an impressive 3,100 submissions from artists in 116 countries. The 30 finalists were carefully selected by a panel of experts. Their remarkable pieces, crafted using various materials such as wood, ceramics, textiles, leather, glass, and metal, are currently being showcased at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art (SeMoCA) until July 30.

Apart from Jeong’s outstanding win, the jury also recognized two honorable mentions. South African artist Andile Dyalvane received recognition for his clay pot, “Cornish Wall,” featuring the imprint of a bonsai brush. German artist Julia Obermaier was honored for her jewelry piece, “Verborgen,” which reimagines the value of jewelry through overlapped crystal pieces.

Established in 2016 under the guidance of Loewe’s creative director, Jonathan Anderson, the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize not only celebrates contemporary craftsmanship but also pays homage to the brand’s origins as a Madrid workshop established in 1846. Loewe considers craftsmanship to be its core essence and remains committed to preserving and promoting this revered art form.

The Craft Prize exhibition in Seoul serves as a platform to showcase the diverse talents and artistic expressions of craftsmen and women from all corners of the globe. The displayed works truly exhibit mastery of materials, technique, and creative innovation. Each piece reflects the distinctive language and expertise of its creator, while also capturing the essence of our contemporary culture.

By winning the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2022, Dahye Jeong joins the league of esteemed artists and craftsmen who have been honored for their exceptional contributions to the field. The prize not only elevates the status of craftsmanship but also shines a spotlight on those individuals who are pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. Loewe’s unwavering commitment to craftsmanship ensures that the brand continues to uphold its legacy as a champion of tradition, innovation, and creative excellence.
