Klarna Reports Substantial Increase in Operating Losses in First Half of Year

Klarna, the Swedish fintech giant known for its buy now, pay later services, has experienced a substantial increase in operating losses in the first half of this year. The company reported a loss of SEK552 million in H1, a significant jump from the SEK84 million deficit recorded a year ago. These losses were primarily attributed to Klarna’s aggressive investment in growth initiatives and an increase in provisions for bad loans.

Despite facing widening losses, Klarna maintained a robust cash flow in the first six months of the year. The firm’s net operating income surged by 37% to SEK4.6 billion, and total sales reached SEK215 billion, representing a 44% year-on-year growth. With a solid foothold in the BNPL market for fifteen years, Klarna has been cementing its leadership position in various markets globally.

One of the key drivers of Klarna’s growth has been its expanding customer base, especially in the US where 7.85 million users are leveraging its services. In certain European markets, such as the UK, Klarna boasts an even larger customer base of 9.5 million. The surge in new customers can be attributed to the rising popularity of online shopping during the pandemic lockdowns, leading more consumers to turn to BNPL solutions like Klarna.

CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski acknowledged the challenges posed by the pandemic, necessitating the company to make strategic adjustments, including revising its credit policies globally. Despite these hurdles, Klarna has witnessed accelerated growth and heightened demand for its offerings. The company earns revenue through fees charged to merchants using its platform, as well as from late payment charges incurred by shoppers.

While Klarna’s losses in the first half of the year reflect the hurdles faced in a rapidly expanding BNPL market, the company’s strong cash flow and expanding customer base underscore its continued significance in the buy now, pay later landscape.
