Kering Commemorates 10-Year Anniversary with New Book

Kering, the renowned French luxury conglomerate, is commemorating its 10-year anniversary since its name change with an exciting new book that delves into its fascinating history. Initially founded by entrepreneur François Pinault almost half a century ago, the company has undergone various identity transformations, including Établissements François Pinault, Pinault SA, Pinault-Printemps-Redoute, and finally settling on the name Kering. In 2013, Kering made a conscious decision to fully embrace the luxury sector, leading to the adoption of the new name, which cleverly combines the English term “caring” with the Breton word “ker,” meaning “home” or “hearth.” This distinct name represents Kering’s global presence and pays homage to Pinault’s origins in Côtes-d’Armor.

With a staggering workforce of 47,000 employees and an impressive revenue of approximately €20.4 billion in 2022, Kering has caught the attention of historian and author Tristan Gaston-Breton. Gaston-Breton was inspired to deeply explore the company’s inception and its evolutionary journey over the past few years. The comprehensive book, which spans over 300 pages, covers Kering’s origins in the timber trading industry in Rennes, its subsequent foray into the distribution sector, and its eventual specialization in the highly lucrative luxury market. Furthermore, the book delves into the significant milestones Kering achieved and their resonance with the societal and economic changes of their respective periods. The author provides readers with an immersive experience by complementing the historical accounts with captivating archival images sourced from the esteemed Ille-et-Vilaine Departmental Archives.

Titled “Kering, de granit et de rêves” (“Kering, of granite and dreams”), this engaging publication not only provides essential historical context but also offers fresh perspectives by featuring interviews with influential figures from diverse fields. Renowned personalities such as Anna Wintour, Jane Fonda, Xavier Romatet, and Bernard-Henri Levy contribute their valuable insights on Kering’s impact and significance. Commissioned by Kering and meticulously researched and validated by the experts at Historien-Conseil, this visually stunning book also showcases the major fashion and jewelry houses that fall under the expansive Kering umbrella. Brands like Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Boucheron, and Bottega Veneta are highlighted and accompanied by captivating visuals and imagery.

“Kering, de granit et de rêves” will be published by Editions Flammarion and is scheduled for release on October 4, 2023. Promising to offer an immersive journey into the world of Kering and its remarkable contributions to the luxury industry, this book is a must-read for enthusiasts and scholars alike.
