Kenzo Takada: From Fashion Icon to Interior Design Legend

Renowned fashion legend Kenzo Takada has made a remarkable return from retirement at the age of 80. However, this time, his focus is not on the world of runway shows, but on the realm of interior design. The Japanese icon, who famously sold his successful clothing and perfume label to LVMH in 1993, has now unveiled his new venture, the brand K3. This decision marks a significant comeback for Kenzo, who stepped away from the fashion industry six years after parting ways with his eponymous brand.

In an interview with AFP, Kenzo shared his excitement about rekindling his passion for creative work by launching his own brand once again. After years of collaborations, the octogenarian designer felt a deep calling to create something more enduring than garments, leading to the inception of K3 with a logo inscribed in Japanese using three horizontal strokes.

By entering the world of interior design, Kenzo can escape the stringent demands of the fashion industry calendar, which revolves around constant collection presentations. He underscored that the essence of design truly lies in the art of living, aligning perfectly with his vision for K3. The brand will offer a range of products including furniture, carpets, wallpaper, ceramics, household linen, and bathroom essentials, all masterfully crafted by Kenzo himself, with a special focus on the traditional Japanese art of mending broken porcelain known as “kintsugi.”

The K3 collection is organized into three distinctive themes – “Shogun,” reflecting masculinity through a palette of black and white hues, “Sakura,” embodying harmony with pastel shades and glimmers of gold, and “Maiko,” a tribute to young geishas with striking shades of red and pink. A standout design from the collection is a low-rimmed table featuring a central water-filled cavity, highlighting Kenzo’s innovative design sensibilities.

Kenzo’s interior design philosophy revolves around creating spaces that exude comfort, softness, and poetry, encouraging relaxation and imagination. The fusion of traditional Japanese techniques with contemporary aesthetics sets K3 apart in the world of design. As the unveiling of K3 is imminent, fans of Kenzo eagerly await the opportunity to experience the legendary designer’s vision for interior living spaces.
