Johnstons of Elgin Celebrates 225th Anniversary with Limited-Edition Balmacaan Coat

Johnstons of Elgin, the prestigious Scottish brand renowned for its exceptional cashmere and fine woollens, is celebrating a momentous milestone – its 225th anniversary. To mark this occasion, the brand has unveiled a limited-edition Balmacaan coat that perfectly encapsulates the blend of tradition and innovation that defines Johnstons of Elgin.

In order to create this truly unique coat, Johnstons of Elgin delved into its extensive 200-year-old archives to unearth an authentic tweed pattern with a contemporary twist. After meticulous research and consideration, designers chose a pattern from 1919 that served as the inspiration for the exquisite Balmacaan coat. Drawing its name from a Scottish estate close to the Elgin mill, the coat holds a significant place in the brand’s heart. This estate has long been a source of inspiration for their Estate Tweeds, for which they proudly hold a Royal Warrant from now-King Charles III.

What sets this limited-edition coat apart from others is the inclusion of a cutting-edge digital ID tag. Collaborating with the digital platform Eon, Johnstons of Elgin has developed a tag that not only provides information about the coat’s fibre source but also offers styling and care tips. This innovative digital ID tag allows customers to delve deeper into the story behind their Balmacaan coat, seamlessly blending modernity with the timeless elegance of this classic garment.

Jenny Urquhart, the Chairman of Johnstons of Elgin, emphasizes the significance of the Balmacaan coat in celebrating the brand’s anniversary. Originally designed for those residing and working on nearby estates, the versatility of the coat has made it a wardrobe essential with wide-ranging appeal. By incorporating this iconic fabric into their anniversary collection, Johnstons of Elgin continues to honor its Scottish roots while embracing the ever-evolving demands of the modern world. The Balmacaan coat truly represents the brand’s unwavering commitment to evolution and solidifies their position as an industry innovator.

In addition to the exclusive Balmacaan coat, Johnstons of Elgin has also introduced a women’s Stewart Check Cape as part of their anniversary collection. This cape features an archive design in timeless monochrome tones based on the Black and White Stewart tartan, further showcasing the brand’s enduring style. Just like the Balmacaan coat, the cape also incorporates a digital ID tag, providing customers with a deeper connection to the craftsmanship and heritage behind their purchase.

Only 50 of these prestigious Balmacaan coats have been made available for purchase, retailing at £1,295. Customers can find them exclusively at select Johnstons of Elgin stores or online. The Stewart Check cape, retailing at £1,495, is also available in store and online. These limited-edition pieces offer customers a unique opportunity to own a part of Johnstons of Elgin’s rich legacy and craftsmanship, while embracing the brand’s forward-thinking and innovative spirit.
