Johnsons Shoes Acquired by Newjohn Ltd Amid Financial Struggles

Johnsons Shoes, a long-standing footwear retailer with a rich history spanning over five decades, faced a bleak future as financial difficulties mounted, exacerbated by the unprecedented challenges brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, in a turn of events that has brought renewed hope to the brand and its loyal customers, Newjohn Ltd, a subsidiary of the Daniel Footwear group, stepped in to acquire the struggling company, preventing the closure of six of its stores.

The locations that will continue operating under the Johnsons Shoes and Bowleys Fine Shoes banners are situated in key areas such as Teddington, Twickenham, Walton-on-Thames, Farnham, Staines, and Northwood. Regrettably, six other stores in Windsor, Newbury, East Sheen, New Malden, Beaconsfield, and Richmond have permanently shuttered their doors, marking the end of an era for these communities.

The decision to purchase Johnsons Shoes was met with relief by many stakeholders, as it not only safeguards numerous jobs but also preserves the brand’s legacy of providing top-quality footwear options for individuals of all ages. The stores were renowned for their diverse selection of esteemed brands like Timberland, Hotter, Barbour, Loake, Clarks, Gabor, Ugg, and Ecco, catering to a discerning clientele with a penchant for style and comfort.

Having navigated the complexities of the administration process, joint administrators Ian Defty and Richard Toone of CVR Global successfully orchestrated the sale, opting to retain all employees on furlough status during the transition period in anticipation of securing a suitable buyer for the business. Newjohn Ltd emerged as the ideal candidate, boasting a wealth of experience in the retail sector spanning more than 20 years.

Defty expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, acknowledging the formidable task of salvaging a traditional brick-and-mortar retailer in the face of a rapidly evolving economic landscape. The challenges faced by Johnsons Shoes in recent times, including soaring rental costs, business rates, and the surge in online shopping competition, underscored the need for strategic intervention to ensure its long-term viability. With Newjohn Ltd’s commitment to bolstering the online presence and product offerings of Johnsons Shoes, a bright future beckons for the brand under its new stewardship.
