Jean-Paul Gaultier Unveils ‘Tattoo’ Collection

Jean-Paul Gaultier, the world-renowned fashion designer, has recently unveiled an exciting new line that pays homage to the brand’s rich archives. The capsule collection, titled ‘Tattoo,’ draws inspiration from the iconic tattoo theme first introduced in Gaultier’s Spring/Summer 1994 collection called Les Tatouages (Tattoos). This highly anticipated collection brings back the infamous flesh-colored and sheer skin-tight outfits adorned with vibrant tribal motifs.

Creative director Florence Tétier spearheaded the creation of the ‘Tattoo’ collection, which features a wide array of tattoo-inspired designs printed on various garments including tops, skirts, and body-hugging stretch tulle jumpsuits. Some pieces showcase the prints all over, while others incorporate subtle accents. Notably, after more than a decade, Jean-Paul Gaultier has reintroduced new versions of a tattooed sailor-style top, incorporating stripes and traditional Japanese tattoo elements. This beloved design appears in various styles, such as wrap-front jumpers, pareos, trousers, and turtleneck tops. The collection also includes scarves adorned with esoteric tattoo graphics.

One of the highlights of the collection is the inclusion of trompe l’oeil items, which are designed to deceive the eye. These pieces replicate the appearance of a naked female body, ranging from faux-denim tops to swimsuits and sheer-effect knitwear. Additionally, the ‘Tattoo’ collection features sweatshirts donning the iconic ‘Safe Sex Forever’ tattoo slogan, originally created by Jean-Paul Gaultier in 1996. The diverse collection is completed by leather and denim items, suits, casual tops, bodysuits, dresses, and the label’s famous corsets with pointed breast cups.

Fashion enthusiasts can get their hands on the ‘Tattoo’ collection starting October 6, as it will be available for purchase on the Jean-Paul Gaultier e-shop and select multi-brand retailers. To promote the collection in a unique and eccentric way, a captivating campaign was launched featuring the adventures of model Mia Kidis and Dominican actress and model Omahyra Mota, who served as a muse for Gaultier in the 2000s. The campaign was brought to life by the incredibly talented New Zealand-born artist and photographer Sharna Osborne.

In a press release, Florence Tétier expressed her admiration for the label’s archives and deemed them incredibly modern. Her intention with the ‘Tattoo’ collection was to honor the spirited Gaultier woman who knows how to strike a perfect balance between work and play, much like a cabaret dancer. By breathing new life into the iconic body-hugging garments found within the brand’s archives, Tétier aimed to celebrate and empower this free-spirited woman.

Overall, Jean-Paul Gaultier’s ‘Tattoo’ collection serves as a testament to the brand’s ability to reinvent itself while staying true to its signature style. By fusing timeless tattoo motifs with contemporary fashion, Gaultier continues to captivate and inspire fashion enthusiasts around the world.
