JD Sports continues its strategic growth in the retail sector with the recent acquisition of Wellgosh, a premium independent menswear retailer based in Leicester. The takeover, which was completed last autumn but only recently announced, saw JD Sports Fashion Plc obtain a 75% holding in Wellgosh, as confirmed by Companies House filings in September 2020.
The leadership at Wellgosh also underwent a significant change, with JD Sports executives Peter Cowgill and Neil James Greenhalgh appointed as directors of the company. This marked a new chapter for Wellgosh, as founder Pete Turner stepped down as a director to make way for Cowgill and Greenhalgh.
Despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and multiple lockdowns, Wellgosh has continued to flourish with a strong emphasis on online trading. The retailer boasts an impressive lineup of brands such as Reebok, Puma, Vans, Nike, and more, alongside their own label.
This acquisition is just the latest in a series of strategic moves by JD Sports to expand its global footprint. Prior to Wellgosh, JD Sports acquired US retailer Shoe Palace, further cementing its position as a key player in the retail industry. The addition of Wellgosh’s diverse brand portfolio enhances JD Sports’ offerings for customers, both in-store and online, solidifying its dominance in the market.
