Japanese sizing technology specialist expands into UK e-commerce market to tackle returns

Japanese sizing technology specialist Makip has expanded its operations into the UK e-commerce market in order to tackle the issue of returns. Makip’s Unisize technology claims to reduce returns by an average of 20% and the company’s own analysis reveals that offering more accurate sizing options can increase the likelihood of purchase by 2.5 times.

Unisize allows online shoppers to virtually “try on” clothes by answering a few basic questions about their age, weight, and height. This data helps the sizing technology to map the shopper’s body size to the clothing item, giving a visual representation of how the clothes will fit the individual’s unique body shape.

Returns have become a major concern for online retailers, especially as customers have transitioned from casual wear to more formal attire during the pandemic. The British Fashion Council has found that 93% of customers cite incorrect sizing or fit as the main reason for returning items.

Currently, Makip collaborates with over 250 e-commerce sites and popular Japanese fashion brands. The company’s president, Shingo Tsukamoto, highlights the importance of virtual sizing technology that takes into account the diverse body size requirements of customers. Makip’s approach involves accurately determining the body measurements of each customer and displaying clothing items in relation to their individual body size. This precise and visual representation reduces the likelihood of returns and encourages repeat purchases.

With the introduction of Makip’s Unisize technology to the UK market, retailers can offer their customers a more personalized and accurate online shopping experience. This has the potential to significantly reduce returns rates, making Makip’s entry into the UK e-commerce market a game-changer for the industry.
