Italian Luxury Brand Prada Joins Forces with UNFPA for Fashion Training Program in Africa

Italian luxury brand Prada has joined forces with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to launch a groundbreaking fashion training program aimed at empowering young women in Africa. The initiative, titled ‘Fashion Expressions: The Stories She Wears’, is the first of its kind in Ghana and Kenya, and its primary goal is to promote sexual and reproductive health while equipping women with practical skills in fashion design and production.

Commencing in May, the six-month program is designed to provide 35 young women from Ghana and 15 from Kenya with hands-on training and knowledge in various aspects of the fashion industry. To further enhance their learning experience, these individuals will also have the invaluable opportunity to gain work experience through internships at local fashion establishments.

Aside from fashion training, this program also aims to raise awareness about sexual and reproductive rights, reduce gender inequalities, and combat harmful practices. By equipping these young women with the necessary tools and expertise to flourish in the fashion sector, Prada aims to contribute to their economic empowerment and overall well-being.

To ensure the program’s effectiveness, Prada has partnered with local organizations, such as the International Needs organization in Ghana and the county authorities of Kitui and the Kitui County Textile Centre in Kenya. This collaboration guarantees that the program is specifically tailored to address the unique challenges faced by young women in these regions.

Prada’s commitment to empowering women through education and skill development is not an isolated effort within the luxury brand industry. Dolce & Gabbana, for instance, recently announced the establishment of the Dolce & Gabbana Point Scholarship in collaboration with the Point Foundation, which supports LGBTQ+ students. This scholarship program will finance a four-year fashion studies course at a college or university in the United States, starting in the fall of 2023.

The collaboration between UNFPA and Prada represents a significant stride towards empowering young women in Africa and promoting gender equality within the fashion industry. By granting access to education and training, these women are provided with the opportunity to pursue their passion for fashion and create a brighter future for themselves. Such initiatives are crucial in driving positive change and fostering an inclusive and diverse fashion industry.
