Institute of Positive Fashion: Accelerating Sustainability in the Fashion Industry

The British Fashion Council is taking a groundbreaking step towards accelerating sustainability in the fashion industry through the establishment of the Institute of Positive Fashion (IPF). This innovative organization will consolidate various existing sustainability initiatives and programs under one umbrella, with the goal of combating the detrimental impact that the fashion industry has on the environment.

Led by the Positive Fashion Committee, which includes renowned brands such as Burberry, Farfetch, and YNAP (Net-A-Porter), the IPF recognizes the need for the industry to address the negative effects of global supply chains. The British Fashion Council emphasizes the importance of a unified approach within the industry to set new standards, drive innovation, and foster green businesses to ensure a sustainable future.

The Institute of Positive Fashion aims to establish an industry-wide framework by drawing on expertise from diverse sectors to support fashion brands in navigating the complex landscape of sustainability. Through the production of resources like white papers and evidence-based business cases, the IPF will guide brands on their sustainable journey.

With a focus on promoting best practices and accelerating progress in sustainability, the Institute will conduct educational programs and campaigns targeting industry professionals and the general public. The British Fashion Council is committed to catalyzing change and advancing sustainability in all aspects through the IPF.

Building on the groundwork laid by the Positive Fashion Committee since 2014, the IPF will prioritize sustainability, equality and diversity, craftsmanship, and community. The Institute plans to unveil a comprehensive ‘roadmap for change’ spanning three years in 2020.

The launch of the Institute of Positive Fashion represents a significant milestone in the fashion industry’s quest for sustainable practices. By uniting industry leaders and fostering collaborative efforts, the IPF aims to generate a lasting and meaningful positive impact. Through this initiative, the British Fashion Council is leading the charge towards a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry.
