Inês Barreto and Niuka Oliveira Win Top Prizes at ModaLisboa Fashion Show

Inês Barreto and Niuka Oliveira, two promising designers, were recently applauded by Sangue Novo as part of the 60th edition of ModaLisboa. Sangue Novo collaborated with the Portuguese brand Seaside to organize a remarkable fashion show for the final stage of its competition, showcasing the talent of five emerging designers.

After the stunning runway show on March 10, two finalists stood out among the rest. Inês Barreto, with her collection ‘Let Us Eat Cake’, which featured pastel tones and latex fabrics, was awarded the ModaLisboa x IED – Instituto Europeo di Design prize. This prestigious recognition grants Barreto the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in fashion design at the renowned Italian institute, which comes with a scholarship worth 20,000 euros. In addition, Barreto will have the chance to present her capsule collection on the ModaLisboa Workstation platform, accompanied by a grant of 4,000 euros and mentoring by the Associação ModaLisboa.

On the other hand, Niuka Oliveira, a designer originally from São Tomé and Príncipe, received the ModaLisboa x Tintex Textiles prize for her capsule collection titled ‘Self knowledge’. Oliveira’s collection showcased experimental cuts and a combination of white, black, deep red, and all-blue ensembles. As part of this award, Oliveira will have the opportunity to complete a three-week artistic residency at Tintex and present her collection on the ModaLisboa Workstation platform. Additionally, Oliveira will receive mentoring by the Associação ModaLisboa and a grant of 1,500 euros.

Both Barreto and Oliveira were also honored with the ModaLisboa x Showpress award. This recognition offers them press and showroom consultancy services at the Showpress communications agency for one season.

The winners were selected by a distinguished jury consisting of Miguel Flor, creative director and editor-in-chief of Prinçipal ModaPortugal magazine, who served as the jury president; fashion consultant Elisa Nalin; Joana Duarte, founder and designer of the brand Béhen; ModaLisboa project manager Joana Jorge; Olivia Spinelli, head of fashion design at IED Milano; Pedro Silva, head of industrialization at Tintex Textiles; and Sara Sozzani Maino, head of special projects at Vogue Italia and international brand ambassador for the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana.

The collections presented by the five participants were made possible with the support of Calvelex/Fabrics4Fashion, Riopele, and Tintex Textile, who provided the materials. Other noteworthy finalists included experimental artist Çal Pfungst, Darya Fesenko, who creates pieces using upcycled materials and draws inspiration from social issues, and streetwear brand Molly98, founded by designer Maria Duque in late 2019.

The latest edition of ModaLisboa, held from March 9 to 12, took place at the Lisboa Social Mitra space, an innovation hub located in Lisbon’s Santa Casa da Misericórdia. Supported by the Lisbon City Council, the event centered around the concept of ‘Core’, emphasizing the essence of the fashion event itself.
