Increasing International Demand for Japanese Fashion Brands

According to the digital international wholesale platform JOOR, Japanese fashion brands are currently experiencing a significant increase in demand from international buyers in key markets. This surge in demand is largely driven by the strength of the men’s and unisex fashion sectors within the Japanese fashion industry. Some of the notable Japanese labels featured on JOOR’s platform include Sacai, Nepenthes, Gramicci, A Bathing Ape, Auralee, Issey Miyake, Nanamica, Descente, Yohji Yamamoto, and Beams Plus.

In 2023, the number of retailers placing orders with Japanese brands on JOOR’s platform has witnessed an 8% increase compared to the previous year. Among these orders, the menswear and unisex categories have played a vital role, accounting for nearly 60% of the total transaction volume for Japanese brands. This is a significant proportion when considering the overall transaction volume on the platform.

What’s interesting to note is that 77% of the wholesale transactions for Japanese brands on JOOR’s platform were driven by small and medium-sized retailers from around the world. This surpasses the average SMB purchasing volume of 57% across the platform. Amanda McCormick Bacal, the SVP of Marketing at JOOR, has highlighted the company’s longstanding relationship with the Japanese fashion market and its commitment to supporting the global growth of Japanese brands. These statistics suggest that indie retailers and buyers from the US and Europe are particularly drawn to Japanese labels.

Sales of Japanese brands outside of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region have witnessed a remarkable increase from 13% to 21% of the total Japanese brand sales between 2021 and 2023. Notably, sales to North America-based retailers saw a significant growth of 62%, while sales to EMEA-based retailers rose by 38% during the same period. The top five countries outside of APAC, consistently showing high purchasing volumes for Japanese brands, include the US, UK, Canada, Italy, and France. Importantly, all three countries have been steadily increasing their purchase volumes.

The rising popularity of Japanese fashion brands among international buyers is a testament to the appeal and influence of Japanese design and craftsmanship. These brands have successfully captivated the attention of buyers outside of their home region, indicating further opportunities for expansion and recognition in the international fashion industry. With the support of platforms like JOOR, Japanese brands now have the chance to reach a wider global audience and establish themselves as key players in the fashion market.
