Holiday Shopping Trends: Last-Minute Gift Ideas

As the holiday season is in full swing, many shoppers are still rushing to complete their gift lists. According to a recent study by Klarna, apparel and accessories are the top choices for last-minute holiday gifts, with 78% of consumers mentioning them as favorite categories.

Interestingly, 75% of shoppers have admitted to procrastinating their holiday shopping this year. Alongside clothing and accessories, other popular gift categories for last-minute shoppers include electronics, gift cards, and home goods. This data highlights that there is still a significant demand for the perfect gifts as Christmas approaches.

Despite the challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, 64% of last-minute shoppers intend to finish their holiday shopping in physical stores. This preference for in-store shopping extends across all age groups, showcasing the enduring value of the brick-and-mortar shopping experience during the holiday season.

David Sykes, head of U.S. at Klarna, has emphasized the importance of these consumer trends, particularly the desire for in-store shopping. He noted that the physical retail experience remains significant, even in the current environment. However, some shoppers have emphasized the importance of curbside pickup as well.

The study also touched upon delivery concerns among online shoppers, with 55% indicating they would still purchase gifts online even if they couldn’t be delivered before Christmas. This underscores the importance of convenience and accessibility for consumers, regardless of delivery timelines.

Overall, Klarna’s study provides valuable insights into the shopping habits of last-minute holiday shoppers. Retailers can use this data to tailor their strategies and offerings to meet consumer needs during the busiest shopping season of the year.
