Highlights from Paris Couture Week: Fendi, Robert Wun, and Mugler

The last day of Paris Couture Week wrapped up in style with three standout shows from Fendi, Robert Wun, and Mugler. Fendi’s presentation was a star-studded affair, drawing in A-list celebrities like Kerry Washington, Milly Alcock, and Amber Valletta. The collection itself showcased a series of breathtaking silvery sheath dresses, slip dresses, and painstakingly woven micro plissé dresses. While there were a few missteps along the way, including a wardrobe malfunction for a Black model and some questionable styling choices, Fendi ultimately displayed a remarkable level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. However, the brand is still on the quest for a distinct identity in the world of couture under the leadership of creative director Kim Jones.

Robert Wun, the recent recipient of the prestigious ANDAM Special Prize, made a grand entrance into the world of couture. His debut show left a lasting impression with its awe-inspiring designs and captivating visuals. The collection featured form-fitting dresses that somewhat restricted the models’ movement, but amidst that constraint, there were moments of tenderness. One notable highlight was the appearance of a Black male bride adorned in a hooded gown embellished with delicate white feathers. Wun’s ability to create arresting images was on full display, establishing him as a promising talent in the couture landscape.

Mugler marked a triumphant return to the runway with Casey Cadwallader’s highly anticipated live show, the first since the pandemic hit. Held in a former slaughterhouse, the show was a true cinematic spectacle, exuding sexiness and self-indulgence that harked back to the visionary concepts of the brand’s founder, Thierry Mugler. Models strutted down the runway under arch lights, accompanied by a camera crew, only to vanish into darkness and reappear on a massive screen. The collection predominantly featured black leather, lace, and stretch fabrics, accentuated by touches of bold red. The show was a bold and dramatic display, capturing the essence of Mugler’s iconic aesthetic. Cadwallader emphasized the importance of fun, love, and representation in the DNA of the brand, reflecting the brand’s major success and significant growth in recent years.

As the curtains draw to a close on another successful couture season, the final day of Paris Couture Week was a fitting conclusion to a week filled with remarkable creativity and innovation. Fendi, Robert Wun, and Mugler all showcased their unique perspectives, leaving a lasting impact on the fashion industry. Fashion enthusiasts eagerly anticipate what the future holds for these iconic brands, as they continue to push boundaries and captivate fashion lovers worldwide.
