Hermès Launches Design Competition for Iconic Silk Scarf

Hermès, the renowned fashion house, has joined forces with Designboom to launch a unique design competition centered around its iconic silk scarf, the Carré Hermès. This is the first time that Hermès has initiated such a competition, providing an opportunity for both professional and amateur artists to participate in the creation of this emblematic accessory that requires over 450 kilometers of silk thread.

The Carré Hermès has been a source of inspiration for the brand’s partnering artists since 1937, resulting in more than 2,000 exceptional designs. With this competition, the Parisian luxury brand is revolutionizing the way in which new designs are created for the scarf.

The Grand Prix for the Carré Hermès is open to graphic designers, illustrators, designers, and individuals with artistic talent. All techniques, including hand-drawn and computer-generated designs, are accepted.

To participate, candidates need to register on the Designboom website before May 31, 2019. They are required to fill out a descriptive form and present a series of works or a portfolio. Only 100 participants will be selected at the end of the registration period.

The chosen candidates will then have the opportunity to share their complete compositions and close-ups of the details from mid-July to mid-September. This will allow the jury to evaluate the quality of the design execution. In addition, candidates must provide an intention note of approximately 250 words explaining the theme of their design. Ten finalists will be selected at the end of this stage and announced in October.

The remaining candidates will have the privilege of spending two days in the Hermès workshops in Paris in November 2019. During this time, they will finalize their design on the actual scale of the scarf, which measures 90 cm x 90 cm. The deadline for completing the project is mid-January.

On March 1, 2020, a jury composed of members from Hermès’ Artistic Direction and Silk Department will select one to three winners. The chosen designs will be rewarded based on various criteria including the clarity of the proposal, the quality of the composition, the relevance of the subject matter, the execution skills, and the ability to combine innovation with tradition.

Hermès will acquire the selected design(s) for a price of €5,000, and the winning designs will become part of the brand’s prestigious collection. This competition provides a unique opportunity for artists to contribute to the creation of a timeless piece of French luxury.
