In a groundbreaking move, luxury fashion house Hermès is embracing the use of alternative materials by announcing its first bag made primarily from mushroom fibers. This shift marks a significant transformation for the Parisian brand, which has long been known for its leather goods heritage. Through a scientific interpretation of the molecular structure of mushrooms, Hermès will be utilizing the patented Fine Mycelium technology to create this innovative bag.
After three years of research and development, Hermès will introduce the Victoria tote bag, which will incorporate Sylvania, a material derived from reishi mushrooms. This material, created by MycoWorks in California, will then undergo tanning, assembly, and finishing processes in Hermès’ French workshops. This move represents a turning point in the luxury industry’s exploration of alternatives to animal leather, particularly as eco-responsibility becomes a significant factor for brand loyalty among new generations of luxury consumers.
Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the Artistic Director of Hermès, highlighted the alignment of vision and values between MycoWorks and Hermès. Both companies share a fascination with natural raw materials and their transformation, as well as a commitment to pursuing excellence and maximizing the longevity of their products. Dumas emphasized that with the utilization of Sylvania, Hermès remains true to its core identity of being an innovative fashion house.
It’s important to note that while the new version of the Victoria bag incorporates mushroom fibers as the primary material, it will not be entirely vegan. The bag will also feature additional details made from canvas and evercalf calf leather.
